what is a solid state drive?

i was looking forum ram and saw a link to an ssd, im wondering what they are and what they are for. i assume they are some kind of hard drive or somthing, are they superior to hardrives?

Yes, they do the same job as hard drives, but they are very different in the way they work. They are superior, but very expensive.

did a little research, and ppl are saying that they use these super tiny but super fast hds for primary programs, and use another bigger slower hd for storage. this idea appeals to me a lot, but there is one catch... for 120 i can get a nice looking one, except thats its only 30 gigs. is that even enough room to store your programs on? how big is windows 7 64bit anyway? vista took up like 18 gigs before i cleared my temp internet folder on my laptop. my point is, at only 30gigs can it even fulfill its primary function?

i am interested in this for a gaming machine (no-raid)

It's faster, yes.

For laptops, it's shock resistant.

However, the downsides are that they are very expensive and small for now.
