I was wondering, besides buying new equipment what is the best (free) way to make a computer a lot faster. I have pretty much run all the adaware programs and virus check and my computer is not that slow but I really want to make it lightning fast. Thanks a lot.

Sincerely,

Alex

yep thats the best. just watch with what you install. You can also see to a couple of things like this:
1. your virtual memory: set about 1500-2500 virtual memory this should be enough. my computer - properties - advanced - performance settings - advanced - change here you change the virtual memory (dont forget to hit set).
2. change your visual windows settings: you can change some things on how your windows displays things like shadows and if they should use nice looking animations. my computer - properties - advanced - performance settings there you can change everything yourself or just set it to best performance.
3. a good way also is to change some of your desktop properties. you can set your windows to the original windows 98 look. just as with your start menu. you can change this stuff for yourself completely in the properties of your desktop and of your start menu.

these settings help you increasing your "working memory" (cant think of the right word right now) and lowering the memory and cpu your windows needs. apart from this you'll just have to keep your computer clean.

what works for me is za firewall, hitman pro(is a combination of a lot of programs from a dutch programmer, it isnt very well know outside of the netherlands but it really is good program and its totally free) + i sometimes check my registry using regcleaner. if you need any of these program just use google theyre all free.

if you've had you current windows installation on your system for a while it might be getting a little clogged with registry entries and old files etc... simply formatting and reinstalling will help things run a little smoother again.

also, if you want to make things run a little smoother in the windows environment its always nice to have at least 1Gb of RAM

it increases your cpu speed. but this also means it becomes hotter so you can only do this a little bit or you have to install a better cooler on your cpu or you can install some more fans. then you can overclock it even more. you can also do this with your graphics card but ive never done that.

also, if you have a spare video card lying aroung, plop that in, and disable your integrated graphics if you have that, to reduce the amount of work your cpu needs to do
