What is the chipset on a motherboard and what is the best?

I'm planning on buying the ASUS M4A78LT-M motherboard with chipset AMD 760G.
But what does that mean and is it any good?

the 900 series is the newest, but if you aren't using a graphics card right now you'll need an 800 for its onboard graphics as the 900's don't have them. where are you buying it from, the site i normally look at no longer carries them so i can't see a price to see what would be the best for about the same money

Hello Marcus:

The main chipset manufacturers these days are AMD, Intel, and nVidia.

What is a chipset?

A number of integrated circuits designed to perform one or more related functions. For example, one chipset may provide the basic functions of a modem while another provides the CPU functions for a computer. Newer chipsets generally include functions provided by two or more older chipsets. In some cases, older chipsets that required two or more physical chips can be replaced with a chipset on one chip. - source: http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/C/chipset.…

There really isn't a 'best' although you might have reasons for choosing one over the other.
Intel is usually the priciest and from what I've read seems to run hotter than the other two.
That's the price you pay for speed, usually.

I generally try to match chipsets with the graphics card and other components I plan to install.

Any one of the three are a good choice.
There are fan boys out there who will disagree.

You might want to check some online forums to see what people are saying about the latest and greatest. This may help you decide on one over the other. It's really up to you and what you plan to use your computer for.
