What is the danger of overclock?

I just overclock my CPU from P4 2.5 to 2.62, but I immediately turn it back to normal again. I am a little worried.

If I overclocked, then underclock it to the normal speed, could the computer store find out? because if I have problem in the future, I have to look for them and if I overclocked, warranty will be cancel. So, could they find out if a computer is overclocked or not.

And is there any other danger regarding to overclocking, I believe many people have the same question.

The average computer store usually is too dumb to notice if you overclocked there hardware. This of course is not always the case. If you burn up a processor or something, they might suspect it. Just tell them your HSF fell off in the middle of the night or sumthin. Some more advanced stores can tell with hardware scans and things like that, so it is a bit of a risk.

As for risk of actual overclocking, yes there is a risk. You could ruin your computer, and all your information. But the chances of that are very small if you take it slow, check for stability, and keep it cool. Overclocked machines can run just as long if not longer than a stock computer, you just have to treat it right.

You might find no matter what you do, your system will not run overclocked. That is usually hardware incapabilities. If you are overclocking a store bought computer and still take it back for updates/fixes then i suggest you wait till you can build one yourself. Or figure out how to fix it and troubleshoot it yourself. When you don't need the store anymore then overclocking it will be less complicated.
