What is the deal with Conroe?

I have been hearing a lot about this chip since joining this community... I cant really find much difinitive stuff on google about it... (that and i'm too lazy to get all in depth about it). Can someone explain to me the advantages of Conroe as opposed to other chips? (is it like 90 core, or does it have cornrows?)

really fast...:)

Amazing at gaming, when it is released the price range is $200-$500
it beats out some $900 AMD processors... very fast...

Conroe is good news for the average consumer, as AMD will be cutting down prices on their CPU's in order to stay competative until they get a new chip out on the market.

I just bought anawesome mobo... it's socket 939, should i buy an X2 when conroe comes out, or should i trash it and get a conroe mobo (which will be expensive due to new ram, CPU, and mobo...)

You should trash it and get Conroe.

lol

I think there's too much i want to do with my computer (I.e. new fans, new gpu coolers, new hdds, and a new processor) to be able to afford that set up... I have been an AMD customer for 3 or 4 years now too... i think ill just have to wait for AMD's badass response to conroe :P

Plus this mobo was so hard to find that i had to buy it off of a guy with a tiny computer shop in canada. I think the sentimental value is too great for me to just trash it. :/

then why did you ask :P
and AMD is gonna have a rough reply to Conroe :D
but that's gonna take a long time

AMD doesn't plan on a new architecture until 2008 (K8L), and Intel said they have something in the works for then. For now Conroe is almost like a Pentium 4 vs. and Athlon Regular. Or a PIII vs K6, a generation up.

Conroe is gonna be amazing, I mean I love my athlon 64 3700+ and all, but conroe is completely reinventing the way at least intels process the information, no more microburst technology, along with smaller wavelengths its all good.

First of all, there was no "microburst technology" as what the P4's used was the "Netburst Architecture".

Second off, what is this stuff about wavelength nonsense you are talking about? The last time I checked, processors used electricity to process information, not light signals. Pfft.

well im thinking of building a computer soom should i stick with a mid range AMD or go for a conroe for gaming/multimedia?

Go for a conroe, it will offer better performance at any price point. AMD will drop prices, but the $200 range conroe is beating the $900 range AMDs in many areas, and they're not making that kind of drop.
