What is the steambox?

Okay I see the steambox might be coming out this year.... I am so confused with it... is it a console or a compact pc? Does it run Ubuntu or something?

Can anyone explain to me the difference between a steambox and a console?

Do you buy your own hardware ? Then install it in the steambox?

It's a PC that runs linux.

It's a PC, not a console. It is just integrated into a small form factor and is controller ready

No. You buy the steambox and just turn it on and use it.

Thanks for the answers. So I could use it for other things then just gaming.

I did see they will be selling 3 tiers of it. I am a little confused on how they will get all the steam games to run in linux :/
 
There's a lot of talk about using WINE. That should work alright, considering a vast amount of the mac library uses WINE as well.
