What is wrong with my build?

I built my first computer about 9 months ago and have not been pleased with its performance. I intended it to be a gaming computer but it will not play many of the games I want it to, World at War for example.

This is my build copy and pasted from newegg

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard
Antec Sonata III 500 ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 500W Power Supply
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz LGA 775
GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP
Western Digital Caviar Black WD5001AALS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"

What did I do wrong? Could I have broken something during the build?
The computer runs kinda slowly sometimes but it gets through the day and does what I want until I try to play a newish computer game.

I am willing to replace whatever needs to be replaced.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The computer will run the game extremely slowly until I give up and exit it myself. I get a really low frame-rate but also the game is in slow motion.
In game videos are frequently choppy with the sound way ahead of corresponding video.

somethings wrong with you 9800gtx :(

from what i read, you've been having your problems every since you built the rig?

That computer should bring World at War to it's knees...something is wrong if you are having trouble playing that. I can play World at War on my laptop with a 7950GTX smooth as silk.

The only thing I could see wrong is a BIOS setting or drivers.

1. Make sure the speed on the processor looks correct in the BIOS.

2. Also make sure you run the latest driver from Nvidia.

3. Make sure your computer is free of viruses. I have worked on a few computers and there were dozens of spyware programs and crap running without them ever knowing. It absolutely crippled the computers performance.

I have full trust and confidence in Antec power supplies...I have used them for years and will continue to use them. The Antec Earthwatts series has all that hippy power saving crap build in. It will reduce the power output and amps it produces to save electricity. Not a good choice for gaming as it is always trying to ruduce the system's power usage. 450w power supply is the minimum power supply that can run that card.

You have to download the drivers for the 9800GTX+ ... I actually had the same problem with my 9800GT. I loaded up a game made in like 2001 and it was going SUPER slow and then I remembered the driver disc. Make sure they're updated drivers, too.
