The 8800GTS would be the best bet if you can spend another $100, because its currently the fastest card (other then the GTX), and is DX10 compatible for the future.

With MIR it is.Though I do agree with everyone else though. Either shoot for the GTS or wait for cheaper directx 10 cards come out.

I don't think you will have many problems playing older games
personally I think you're gonna have more trouble playing dx10 games on a dx9 card than playing dx9 games on a dx10 card
and yes radeon(ati) is coming out with thier dx10 card the r600 soon
