im turning 18 in october and my grandmother is giving me the savingsbond she had for me all my life, its 1700$. at first i was going to put it away for when i move out on my own but instead of doing that im going to stay with my mom and go to college (ITT TECH). so....i was wondering what kind of computer i can get with 1700 bucks? i know i can get a laptop that i just saw in a best buy ad but im not sure of the quality, ive never been computer shopping before lol even though im talented with computers. ive been using the same one for about 4 years.

Welcome to computerforums :D

You could get a really good comp for 1700.

I dont know what your financial situation is but...
My suggestion however would be to not use it all (or any on a comp) and save it for longer :D
IDK im a saver though...

What would you be doing with the computer?
Are you definately going for a laptop? If not, would you build yourself (not hard)?

yea i realy have been thinking of saving it so i can rent an apartment when i move out. although, i can get that money from my paycheck from safeway and ive been wanting a new computer for a long time lol becous the one i have is horrable, disastrous. mainly what i would be doing on it is just the internet and a few games. but i still may save it, im just wondering what kind i can get witht he money if i were to choose to spend it :)

*edit* i have heard building a computer yourself is expensive, and ive been looking at the prices on motherboards and video cards and stuff and it looks a little pricy lol

:D You'd be able to do a lot more than surf the internet with 1700.
You should be able to play latest and greatest games for a while :D
I understand the 4 year old computer (see my sig lol).

In general, it is usually cheaper to build the computer your self. Especially in higher end computers (1500+). Also the computer will have much more quality parts if you build yourself. You have complete control over what parts you want. Im sure someone else can explain a lot better than I can. Also, theres a lot of people here who can assist you in picking out the best parts for cheapest if you choose to build.

Ive also heard companies who build computers (dell, HP etc) will often use low quality parts that they dont advertise (Mobo, the kind of ram, etc.) to bring prices down...Cant remember where i heard that but it sounds believable :)

oo get a desktop, not a laptop , it wont last as long , go to the desktop computer section and post to build a computer there for 1700

Well Laptop could be useful, I think I'm going to get one too, cause I move a lot....
