what laptop is best for me?

Im gun shy on what I need after what just happened with my current 3 yr old laptop.
It has a pentium 4 which gives me no battery life and is very loud due to the fans. Now it shuts off when it gets too hot since doing a restore. Plus it doesnt have extra buttons besides the keyboard (like volume and stuff) and the speakers suck anyway.

Whats the best I could do for 500 bucks? I mainly surf the web, play itunes, use photoshop and illustator, watch streaming video (youtube, myspace, espn). Id like to hook a tv tuner up to it and record tv as well. Id like to multitask as well (so you will prob tell me i need a duo 2) Id like wide screen as well. Am I lookin more at 900 bucks?

I believe my mom just got an Compaq nx7400 and I like it as a possibility for me to get one too but what are your opinions?
I think it has media center but couldnt i just install xp pro instead?

EDIT: I've noticed the HP DV6000 popping up everywhere on the net. Is this a good one?

For a Core 2 Duo and the abiltity to capture video, yes, you're looking at around 900- 1000 dollars roughly. The dv6000 is a good line, you may check out the HP DV6140us. That's a nice model for under a thousand.

The dell one is pretty good. The only thing is you won't get an "Express upgrade to Vista".

should I even care about Vista? What is so special about it? Ive got a copy of XP pro if I don't like what it comes with.

Also, can upgrade the ram down the road in any laptop?

Well that depends if you are interested in the new Windows which is going to be released on January 30,2007 called Vista. There will be 5 versions of it if I am not mistaken. Basically if you would pick a laptop with the "Express upgrade to Vista" you get a free upgrade to the Home Version of Vista if I am not mistaken. But this laptop you chose doesn't have that option.

You say you have a copy of XP Pro. How do you know it will work? Have you installed it before on another computer? If so, chances are it won't work again unless you install it on the same computer.

About the ram. You can upgrade the ram down the road but I am not sure if you have to order direct from Dell or if you can use the ones they sell on Newegg.

Hope this helps

what is gonna make vista better than xp?
Also, Will that dell computer perform better than my current setup:
Pentium 4 2.8 GHz
512 MB (DDR SDRAM)
40 GB EIDE
15 in. XGA TFT LCD

I think so, it'll perform better than your old one.
Proccessor, memory all better.
Emmm for $50 more, you could get 128MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1300, which is better than Intel GMA 950.
I'll say just add that one.
About the Vista, since it's free (only $10 for shipping and handling), just take it.
I guess Vista will look good, but there might be some bugs with the new Vista (I'm pretty sure there's not that many bugs since people have tested it).

Hope this will help.

oh i didnt realize vista was only 10 extra bucks. I dont really game at all on cpus, but if i did what kind of gaming could i do with the 128MB ATI Mobility?

That link for HP did work, try this one out (the same laptop that he gave you):

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/cto/computer_customize_components.do

It's a pretty good choice.
Check this one out, too, this is from Tiger Direct, this is another option, too.
If you customized that HP like the specs that this has, the HP one will be more expensive.

About the video card, it's true that X1300 aren't capable for a lot of new games, but it's still better than GMA 950, I could provide you with the source if you want to.

Yeah, Pentium M is better on battery life because it's designed for mobile computing.
Check out Dell as well.
If you want to consider used notebooks, Ebay has a lot of them, some of them aren't bad, just check the seller's feedback.
Hope you get a good one!
