What suse are you trying to use. I just installed open suse 10.2 last night and it did all the formating and partitioning for me.

making the partitions is easy as eating pancakes....

You have to make a root partition, that is where / exists and the tree to all your directories, that is your main partition. You probably want to use ext3 or reiser file systems. Then you create a swap partition, typically you double the size of your ram. So, if you have 1 gig of ram, you would create a 2 gig swap partition. Newer Linux file systems, like ext3 can run with no swap, but I haven't done so myself.

Suse is probably one of the easier installers I have used when it comes to Linux, I don't think it gets any easier than that.

as far as i know , you don't need to partition anything. It does it automatically.suse 10.1 and 10.2 will do it auto.
You probably chose an advance setup where you configure HD's yourself.
