im also thinking about buying another 2gbs of ram

Also, what would u guys recommend me get? ... i know most of you are gonna laugh and say i am not even close to being able to getting vista Ultimate. i just wanna know what i need to upgrade? or what?

It's not so much the amount of memory since 2gb handles the 32bit edition Home Premium quite well here. But a faster cpu would be the item where the overall boost would come from. The AMD AM2 6000+ X2 has worked out quite well at 3+ghz here.

I was catching on 64bit lately planning to go with one of Windows 7's 64bit editions when the next version comes out. Presently I am looking to replace XP Home with something once through with beta testing a new prebeta tool for Vista/XP dual boots and will see a drive open for another distro along with a 64bit edition of something for the time being.

The second pair of 1gb dimms or swapping out for a pair of 2gb dimms would be a thought if you were planning to run rather demanding programs that chew up memory. But the main item there being a faster cpu would see a benefit regardless of whether you run 64 or 32bit.

Best Dual out that i know of!
If you're going to spend that much, i'd go ahead and get either a Q6600 or a Q9300 for a bit of future proofing.

Your HW is excellent for Vista Ultimate 64-bit, which is what I am running on my best machine. The main requirements are 1. dual-core processer, 2. at least 2GB Ram, 3. PCI-express video card, at least 256 MB. Helpful for best performance = SATA hard drive.

I was just looking to see what the current price for an OEM release for seeing XP replaced or moved to a second primary until Windows 7 is out for a 64bit edition there and the requirements were listed as such at newegg.

If you go to the MS comparison page:

1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 GB of system memory
40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
Support for DirectX 9 graphics with:
  • WDDM Driver
  • 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)
  • Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware
  • 32 bits per pixel

Thanks man that helps out alot,

and for one last question, I play a good amount of games, such as: Counter strike: source, COD4, World of warcraft, etc... Are these games going to run alot slower on Vista Ultimate, than on XP?

It doesn't really matter about the OS, it depends on the specs and what other programs are running at the time.

Surprisingly I have Return to CastleWolfenstein formerly run on a 98 then XP/98 some years back running well on Vista. The one thing besides a 2gb of memory for the new version is seeing a faster cpu.

While the bare minimum to get any edition running is 800mhz to 1ghz a jump from 2.2ghz to 3ghz for clock speed saw everything running well with the 32bit edition of Home Premium on here. AMD states that the 64bit editions should notice a 10% performance increase on the same hardwares.

Running an AMD cpu here I may end up seeing Ultimate 64 go on and take notes on just how well it does perform overall. Some complain about games being slower however until you look at their systems running only 1gb of memory and a slower cpu to start off with.

Yet Steam games like HL2, EP1, EP2 plus mods along with Prey, Fear, Crysis, and others actually seem to run smoother with Vista seeing an improved crash control method over XP. Vista simply being a newer version with more processes sees an increased minimum from 64mb-128mb to 512mb.

Likewise 98 ran slower then 95 years back being larger and seeing newer requirement. With the 64bit edition the only problem since it should utilize the 64bit side of current cpus out more efficiently would be some degree of programs as well as some games lost being a newer version along with being 64 not 32bit.

Backward compatibility only can go so far while most who have been running this particular edition have favorable reports on the games they run. If you have adequate memory and a rather good cpu speed and of course video card plays a role you should make out alright.

Personally I haven't seen any lags with the games listed over what is seen in XP. That's even moving up from a low end to mid range video card.
