What perephials do I need for gaming / keyboard / mouse / etc?

I've been gaming on my cheapo Microsoft Keyboard - and laser mouse - both of which I purchased on clearance at Office Depot. I have found it kindof frustrating switching between weapons in combat - to knife somebody - in close combat - or as situations / needs change quickly during game play.

What is the most important hardware ( if any ) that is needed for gameplay? Is it a gaming mouse iwth multiple buttons? Or is it more important to find a gaming keyboard with programmable keys. Or are both needed for good gameplay?

I had been looking at the G15 - is that good - or other recommendaitins?

I try to be careful with my budget outlay and spending on anything PC related - and don't want to spend a ton of money on keyboard - and new mouse - to find out - there really wasn't any need to spend more - that I just needed to practice more on using my keyboard in live gameplay.

Looking for anybody's thoughts / opinions / suggestions on the issue - based on your experience gaming on your PC. I want to know if I should be upgrading a few parts - or stay pat without wasting the money unnecessarily.

Thanks

I've been using this Optical Mouse 1000

I picked up 2 of them for 5.00 each one day at Office Depot. Looking forward to hearing others experiences / thoughts on the issue.

Sounds like I should be thinking about upgrading my mouse though.

yea there's a big difference in a "laser mouse" and an "optical mouse"

if you serious about gaming, your only choice is to use a laser mouse.

Droogie is right. I have the G5 mouse from Logitech and its awesome. I don't have to take it apart to clean it which is what I love about it. In an optical mouse, you have to take out that little ball and clean it up on the inside from time to time but with laser, there is no ball so that's a positive.

lol, no that's a ball mouse.

optical and laser both don't have a ball, optical uses LED, laser uses infra-red; making the laser mouse much more precise.

Thanks - I was wonderin what he was talkin about.. LOL

Glad to learn there is a difference. I've been getting my butt kicked when I went from easy to medium level on Enemy Territory. Now I got an excuse - I can blame my mouse. :D

I haven't seen any mention of keyboard - is it pretty much agreed upon - that the keyboard isn't as important as upgrading the keyboard? My gaming experience is still pretty limited.

see i disagree with all of it, I honestly don't understand why people would use gaming mice and stuff, they are a waste of money.

I permanently sit in possibive scores on any fps (which is really the only time a gaming mouse would be needed) and I have a £13 keyboard and a £4 mouse, there was a player in my old clan who was also very good at CoD and other fps games and he had a £3 mouse he bought from Tesco (big supermarket).

It is more how you play than what you play with I find

i agree with you somewhat. you can be a good gamer with any mouse/kb, but in order to play longer you need comfortable equipment.

for example, the g5 mouse, while a good gaming mouse, is too thin for me and gives me cramps when i play for an extended period of time.

the ms sidewinder is bulkier so i can play comfortably, longer.

I'm 6'6" and have giant orangutan hands, and the g5 fits me like a glove.

I recommend getting a good gaming mouse, a decent keyboard, a joystick, and game controller.

The mouse I have now, as you'd expect from a cheap mouse, is for both left and right handed people, so it isn't "moulded" to the shape of a right handed person like the sidewinder and I have played all day before, by which i mean maybe 20 hours solid, and no cramp, no nothing, but i hold mice very very loosely anyway, so that may be why :P

like I say, it isn't what you use it is how you play, how you ghold a mouse is different to how i do, to how everyone else on this forum does, everybody is different which is why you and your g5 are good, zombine and his sidewinder are good, me and my budget mouse are good, it just depends what works for you.

my point is, there isn't anything you NEED for gaming, you may play better with the cheap stuff, you may be unlucky and need to fork out on an expensive gaming mouse and keyboard

Oh! Thanks! If I need any more non-fact based opinions disguised as expertise, I will find you first.

this isn't entirely true. pretty much anybody WILL play better with a mouse that has higher DPI, it's more precise and accurate.

this isn't to say, it'll make you a great player over night, but it will undoubtedly make a difference.

no! they aren't a waste of money..have you ever even used one?

well said.

one thing i would like to point out, is that it also depends on the game you're playing as well as your style.

for example, fps games require, as you said, fast weapon switching. my g5 wheel is very solid and i can scroll through my weapons very easily while the sidewinder wheel has a 'lose' feel and i often scroll past the weapon i need.

another thing is hand movement. if you like to throw your hand around, a good optical mouse with low sensitivity would work nicely. if you have limited space and have more controlled hand movements, a lazer mouse with high sensitivity might work better.

also, a mouse with higher dpi would allow you to aim better in a fps game, but might not be as important in a strategy or rpg game.

the G15 is a nice keyboard, but i find i like the much cheaper logitech multimedia kb for most games. also, i haven't got around to using any of the macro keys, so unless you really need them, like if you play rpg games, don't waste your money on one.

if you're serious about gaming, you might just have to try out different setups, i have two setups for different types of games, but really, anything will do as long as you're having fun:

doesnt really matter what you buy, as long as the keyboard you get can go up to 4 buttons at the same time pressed. (I had one that could only use 2 buttons at the same time. so walking back right, and then jumping was impossible and it would start beeping. very annoying. )

other than that, I've been playing games for years, and I'm rubbish at any game I play. no noticable change/improvement on my playing. all I can say is that the key of a somewhat more expensive keyboard do feel nicer. (same with a mouse.)

stay away from wireless. You can get by with just a basic mouse keyboard.I do use a G15/G9 mouse -keyboard setup and love them although you can do well with just the basics, the G5 laser and the Mx 518 optical are also nice wired mice that work really well and are a little cheaper than a G9.

if your going to play for hous on end i would also like to recomend a track-ball. i use one for gaming and my drafting work for the navy. you dont have to move you wrist so you cut out on the tired tense feeling of using a mouse. logitech hve some nice ones that also resond to how you move the ball really well so you can make really big adjustments or really fine ones. and for a key board an ergonomic programable keyboard probably wouldnt hurt.

for gaming track-balls aren't too good, even for long use gaming. Yes, your hand doesn't get as tired, but you can't play as well. If you are playing an RPG or RTS game it will probably be ok, but for FPS games, especially online, it will be crap because you can't move well enough, even with high sensitivity and that.

I'd imagine you could probably get used to it, but the treid and tested ways are still used for a reason, they are the best ;) (ie, a normal mouse).

I agree with the keyboard though, just about any keyboard will do (so long as it has more than 2 buttons pressable at a time as archangel says) but an ergonomic one will be better, in the short and long term for your hands and wrists
