I have a motherboard (2002) and it has a Amd athlon xp cpu on it with 1 gb of ddr ram. Are there any newer processors that are compatable with this setup? The current processor has been used to death and for a whiel has been sounding like a jet engine, so i guess it is time for a change.
I dont want to upgrade the mb, because im just looking to do small upgrades to a current system, and plus, the cpu is the problem.
the mb is an A7N266VX

why yes it is, how did you guess?

google!!! - it's an OEM Sony Board that looks like nobody else used that model no.

Looks like Socket 462 - I don't see anything resembling that at Newegg. I'm still a greenhorn - but I'm guessing you have no options for upgrade - and if you had em - don't think you'd want to do it anyway.

Plan B?

I've got two of those - one 7 yrs old - 1 5 yrs old. Working on makin mine an Ubuntu server ( more procrastinate than workin .. :P )

After I get the server up and workin - may use the second PC as a Ubuntu desktop ( more out of curiosity than utility )

im supprised this computer has worked for so long, its a 2002 model vaio and its been used practically every single day since. still works like it did when i bought it, minus the loud jet engine psu and cpu fans

Ebay has a lot of older processors.. right down to the original pentiums and so on... have a look there.
