What RAM to buy

Hey guys I am looking to get extra 1Gb RAM soon and want to know is there any difference in having 1 stick of 1Gb non-gaming ram and having 1 stick of gaming RAM?

Thanks for any help

"Gaming" RAM is just high-performance RAM that will have tighter timings and OC higher than Value RAM, and also will cost more. For the system in your sig, generic brand/"non-gaming"/value RAM is good enough - you'll only want "Gaming RAM" if you want the absolute best no matter what the price, or if you're a hardcore OCer, and apparently you're neither.

WOW... I just looked for this RAM in online stores in South Africa and found it cheaper than "normal" RAM but I can't buy online and I have to buy from the people I got my PC from for guarantee purposes... damn!! Maybe I will wait till the guarantee expires and then do everything myself... how much will only having 1GB RAM Make when I play games with an 8800GT?

It's not so much the fact of having 1GB of RAM when playing games, but you really want about 3GB or 4GB of RAM just for good system performance. And just get the cheapest RAM you can find. I was debating selling my 4GB of PC-5300 5-5-5-15 memory for 4GB of PC-6400 4-4-4-12 memory. The latter being way more expensive. I checked a memory benchmark to find that the faster RAM gave an average of 0.5fps higher in game. I would just look into getting 4GB of 5300 RAM, or whatever you have in your computer. ANY RAM is faster than the page file on your hard drive.

lol yea... ok I think my motherboard only lets me have 4GB... will eventually upgrade my Mobo but that can wait... Oki cool so any RAM is fine... great cause RAM is not very expensive... does Dual CHannel make a big difference to the performance?

does Dual CHannel make a big difference to the performance?
In benchmarks, yes, as it effectively doubles the memory bandwidth. In real-life, depends on the RAM speed and applications you run - if you have slower ram like DDR2-533/677, and are running extremely memory intensive applications (heavy games, file compression, video editing etc.) it's going to make a significant diffrence. For medium-weight gaming, everyday computing, internet etc. it makes absolutely no difference, esp. if you're running faster RAM like DDR2-800/1066.

Having said all that, I still recommend having the RAM in dual-channel to eliminate any possibilty of bottlenecking since it's so easy - all you need is matching-capacity pairs of sticks.

I agree. I had 3GB of memory and upgraded to 4GB. My computer instantly sped up at everything, even considering I already had 3GB. File transfers (copy, paste, cut) went from 3MB/s to 15MB/s. Bootup and shutdown time is faster too. Whatever amount of RAM you get, just make sure it is an even number haha.

From past experiences, always stick to Quality Name Branded RAM such as: Kingston, OCZ, Crucial, and Corsair.

Stay FAR FAR away from Korean made memory chips such as: Samsung, Hynix, Hynh, Goldstar. Also, stay away from Markvision memory branded chips. These memory modules may be cheap for your wallet. But they are not worth the headaches in "memory allocation" error message or the dreaded "blue screen of death" or where the total amount of memory shows only up to 75% of what it should be or where the OS just simply crash.

After swapping in with REAL QUALITY memory, all problem solved. Never looked at buying any frakking Korean made memory chips/module again.

Trust me, you are SOOOO much better off with Kingston or Corsair made and branded memory chips.

Same goes with Hard Drives. Never buy Samsung Hard Drives. All three 500 GB Samsung Hard Drives crashed with Hard Disk failures. I bought 2 x 500 GB Maxtor and 2 x 500GB Western Digital SATA HDD and they're still running smoothly.

Same goes with the LCD Monitors. We bought 5 LCD monitors and they were Samsung. 4 of them died. What a load a crap. Acer X203w LCD monitors lasted longer and had better quality for the price.

Samsung is a real piece of crap makers. They should be banned from importing their stuff in to USA/Canada.

...oh, and let's not forget about their monochrome printers...when they're cheap, they're really cheap. Those printers don't last on regular use. They are a real piece of crap.

...my family member bought a Samsung digital camera, and in 1 month, she hated it and returned it for a Canon for better quality.

Save yourself from the trouble...never buy Korean made computer-related-techno stuff. Which reminds me, my Korean friend said her Kia (Korean made Honda Civic version) is a piece of crap. She even insisted to buy American/Japanese made stuff as they are better quality.
