We want to make are HP desktop pc wireless because we are moving it and leaving the network box downstairs.

But do I use a wireless USB dongle or a PCI network card.

Whichever you prefer. If you're comfortable opening the case and installing a PCI card, then by all means get one of those. Otherwise a USB adapter will work just fine.

The range is usually the same. PCI might be slightly better.

Disagree.

I tried both. Since I put my tower at the under my desk, PCI card has poorer connection than USB, as I can use a extention for usb to put it to an open area to get better connection

i have always found usb dongle to be better as they usually come with a long cabled cradle so that gives you some extra length which means better signal, plus you can plug and unplug the usb into any desktop or laptop so its not stuck in one machine.

i also think netgear do the best usb dongles

Depends on the antenna. Many USB adapters don't have external antennas, causing them to have poor signal. Just buy a USB adapter with external antenna and it'll be convenient and fast.
