when i built mine, I just put it all in at once. Put all the cards in, then hooked up the drives, closed it up and turned it on. Windows should detect just about everything and have a driver that works well enough to let you install the real ones.

Just fyi, to boot your computer you have to have a g-card and to install windows you have to have a hard drive, a cd-drive and a keyboard. So those 4 things have to be installed before you do anything.

general case yes but you dont *always* need a CDdrive to install windows :P ... not even sure about keyboard ... lol now i getting nit-picky so ill stop :P

im just wondering how you would do this? (in a nutshell)
You'd have to dump a Preinstallation environment to the HDD beforehand :P Ive not tried it with WXP but I used to do this with W2K when they gave us machines without optical drives.

Disclaimer: Naturally you should all know i was being stupidly technical and for all intents and purposes, an optical drive is needed.

hahaha okay mr technical.

Every mobo i've encountered will just beep at you and stop after posting the ram if there is no vid card. I've never been able to get windows XP to load without a keyboard attached, but I have a headless windows 2000 box as a server that has no mouse, keyboard or monitor attached. Just power and network and it runs fine.

so i have 2 drives, keyboard, and everything in the sig.

first: install drives
second: keyboard
third: windows
fourth: does a hdd have a cd to install too? "my seagate didnt come with anything exept bubble wrap and anti static stuff..."

LOL yeah :P

Ive not tried it (yet, might try today if i get some time) but if you do an unattended installation where the cd is premounted on the HDD (i.e., cheating the requirement for an optical drive) you can (or should at least) be able to get away without a keyboard

1. Put computer together
2. Turn computer on
3. Go into bios, while waiting to load BIOS, put XP CD into optical drive
4. Check to see that CD is first drive to boot (not horribly needed but its not like you have anything else to do :P ... ok so you can tweak the BIOS options too)
5. Save BIOS settings
6. CD will auto boot (or tell you to "Press any key to boot from CD" .. do that)
7. Install the OS

If you need a step by step, look here

if you're installing to the hard drive through booting, then no. I just tossed mine in, booted of teh CD and went on my way. If you install the hard drive as a second drive with windows already installed, then you usually need to run the CD to get windows to mount the drive. It does kinda varry. I've had drives that were plug-m-play without problem.

but it needs a cd for instalation...

What needs a CD? Your keyboard? No No you do not. You merely need to plug your keyboard into your computer and type away. The CD will have drivers so that you can make use of the extra functions that your keyboard has. You don't however need to install the keyboard drivers for basic keys. Hence why I said to "Plug it in" Don't question it... Just do it, You'll appreciate that you had.

LOL i think Vortman and I are talking about an OS installation requiring a CD while you were talking about keyboards ... and so was Dilly_man at one point :)
