What should i use....dont want to clutter up pc

Hi again,

Ok now i am trying to make my pc more "safe" on the net.

I am running windows xp, with avg free antivirus program.

If i download Zone Alarm, do i need to turn off the built in firewall that comes with windows XP?
Will zone alarm cause problems using messanger or any other programmes on my pc??

Also, i dont want to download unnecessary programmes to protect my pc, is zone alarm enough or should i download more programmes also.

Yes, you should turn off the Windows firewall

If configured properly, Zone Alarm shouldn't affect messenger or any other program.

Also, i dont want to download unnecessary programmes to protect my pc, is zone alarm enough or should i download more programmes also.

As well as an antivirus program and firewall, you should have anti-spyware programs. Spybot and Adaware make a good combination. Spyware blaster is a good addition as well, as it prevents spyware from being installed on your computer in the first place.

Once ZA is installed, and you try to open messenger, a permission pop up will appear in the bottom right corner asking if you want messenger to allow access to the internet. Check the remember settings check box, then click okay, and your set to go

But one more wuestion lol sorry.....

Ok, since i installed zone alarm, spybot and ad-ware my flatmate who is on a lan with me cannot connect to the internet.

His computer used to connect to the net through mine...ie my pc had to be switched on and connected to the net before he could connect.
We are using bt broadband with speedtouch broadband modem.

when i shut down zone alarm he can connect to the internet through my pc but as soon as i swithc it back on he cannot connect.

Please help me out...i need to get this working

Thats the problem i had when using ZoneAlarm. I couldnt configure the network settings. Have a read of this and see if it sorts your problem out. If you search in google for "zonealarm ics" or "zonealarm internet sharing" or something similar it should give you lots of pages about solving your problem. If all else fails, find another firewall.
 
You can build a dedicated firewall with an old Pentium or PII machine, throw in a $15 hub or switch and you've got a good, protected network going.
