what did I buy?!? The top one is the HD "plugs" I have, the bottom is the ones I just got... what did I do wrong, is there any way to fix this?

These are SAS not SATA.

Yeup. Where'd you get them? SAS drives are more for business grade hardware typically. Although as you pointed out they are pretty similar to normal SATA.
