What the heck is going on???

Hey my mobo fried a while ago so I got a new one. Noticed the CPU temp was 160 normally and would go over 170 playing games (bad)

So I got some thermal paste / compound and applied it to play Guild Wars. I put it in and it's up at 173 ...???

Also AFTER i put in the thermal paste it said "overclocking failed please hit F1 to enter setup or hit F2 to load default"

There is nothing overclocked in setup I NEVER overclock and never changed anything so I hit F2 for default.

The temp is still way up and nothing is overclocked

Am I suppose to wait until the thermal paste dries before I turn the PC on?
 
Thermal Paste isn't sppose to DRY, it's suppose to stay pasty, that's how it helps transfer the heat! Now, those temps are WAY too high, so something's obviously wrong. The only explination I have for it getting higher after you reapplied it as that you put too much on there. My judge is usally enough to where you don't see the writing on the die...

As for the overclock deal, I'm really not too sure about that...sorry.
 
TOO much can harm it? Yea i put too much. The guy at the shop said "half the size of a pea" i put about 1 pea and a half so I should wipe it all off and reapply very little?

What is the point of this thermal paste? So without it no heat is transferred... which is good for minimizing temperature?
 
what proc, motherboard..etc

also did it run that warm before your other motherboard fried.

i had an old celeron 2.0 that the motherboard crapped out (was hit by lightning) so i got another cheap arse board and dropped hte proc in and it worked for a while but ran EXTREMLY hot untill it finaly fried itself.
this may be the case ware your CPU may have gotten damaged and may need to look into a new CPU before you take out your new board too ;)

also look at your voltages and make sure they are correct

Yes my old motherboard was fried by lightning.

No the temperature was never this high.

I don't know what is normal for voltages to be set at NOR do I know how to change voltage settings.

However, the guys at Geek City Computers said my CPU was fine... but i don't trust them, they're a bunch of punk kids.

I WAS using a P4R800VM mobo with CPU 3.0ghz pentium 4 now I"m using

P4P800SE with same CPU
 
ALSO... my FAN speed doesn't seem to be increasing above 2600... even when I start up programs or games... BEFORE the old mobo fried when I played Everquest II the fan would go up to 4500 how do i fix it?

Well I didn't know what to do so I wiped off ALL the thermal paste and gonna try it out now to see what happens I guess. My brother already made his char on Guild wars and leveling up... gotta try somethin

Can anyone tell me what the purpose of thermal paste is and will it do any harm if i have NO thermal paste cuz I need my CPU cool
 
Now the temp is at 66 C normally which I don't know if it's good or bad? I think the temp is about 6 C hotter then it was before ALL the thermal paste.

Does thermal paste cool it down or heat it up?

Now it's gone up to 69 C

My fan is at 2600 RPM when the temp is that high.. is that normal? I thought it was suppose to go up to 4000 RPM if it was high? How do i make it go faster? i went to bios and enabled Q Fan control and put fan speed ration at 15/16 but it's not speeding up?

With the game on it gets close to 80 C but that's only about 1-2 minutes of playing...

Am I suppose to spread the thermal paste myself or just squish the little drop by putting the heatsink back on and let it spread itself?

Yes, too much can harm it. Rather than transfering the heat, it'll simply act as insulation and cause the processor to heat up. YOu probably could run a processor without the paste, but I wouldn't reccomend it. It's made to help get a good solid transfer of the heat from the die to the heat sync... Half the size of a pea might be find for processors with larger surfaces, but older socket A's and such need MUCH less because there's such a small area. Once again, just enough to cover the top with a nice coat. Look around, there are guides.

The fan, I'm assuming there might be something with the mobo limiting it, or it might just be reading it differently. Make sure any readings you get are from the bios first. Other software is rarely as accurate.
 
Well I looked through the BIOS... it detects teh fan it only goes 2600 RPM for some dumb reason. Also the BIOS shows the CPU temp HOTTER then my ASUS Probe program.

I'm gonna play it 78C guild wars cuz i'm impatient if it fries i'll be pissed off for months oh well.

I put very little paste the second time around and anyways I think this is one of the newer ones P4P800se ? It's got 4 DIMM slots supports DDR400 all that.

Any tips on what i can do?

last time i checked 1.5 peas!=.5 pea :p if you want a number, shoot for 0.1-0.2mm thick layer.

Fan speed dont matter that much if you've got too much or not enough thermal paste anyways ... and hell rpms dont matter much period
