For the last few months it no longer plays avi's, and it wont play some audio files too, although i'm not sure if thats it's fault. When I try to play an avi it will say "downloading codecm, codec acquired", then just give me the music visualizations and possibly audio.

I have tried uninstalling it and re-installing it... any advice? I have VLC Media Player, but I dont really enjoy using it.

so what Os is this XP or Vista either way, you have a dozen of free alternatives such as Media player Classic or VLC, they don't need codecs, since you don't like VLC try the below
Klite Codec pack

put windows media player to sleep will you :)
