What to get

So i have been given a 5-6 year old desktop for my bday as my friends want to get me into gaming pc's which i would really like to get into accept most my money goes into my rc cars, helis and planes but i had some money left over from all that and went and bought what they all recommended so i could just play some basic games until xmas when i will upgrade. I bought a gigabyte GTX 550 Ti graphics card to replace the old crappy asus POS. Anyway to the intial question, now iev been asking around for what to get and were to buy it from, iev been buying from a local outlet and they have been cheaper then any other shop or internet site could find and my friends said its a good place. Now my trouble is that my friends say that nividia is a good graphics card and that you get what you pay for, they have built a few gaming computers and know what there talking about, while when I asked some other friends at school some say nividia is good but abit pricey, others say what my friends say and that radeon and AMD is crap while another mate of mine not from the same group but who makes computers as a part time job, he says that radeon and AMD is good while nividia is crap. Being a noob to computers i dont know who is telling the truth and want to finish this once and for all or is it just personal preference?:confused:

I don't think either of them is crap. What you need to look for who offer you better value of money on the same price point.
Also it usually be the manufacture to go for to determine if the card is good

nVidia and AMD both produce quality products. nVidia and AMD have different things going for them. You just have friends whom are fan based, in other words, fanboys.

You just have to find a manufacturer that you like. Some use poor heatsinks / fans, while other companies put quality products on the GPU's. Every GPU is the same between all of the companies of the same make of GPU. However, the manufacturers like to tweak the settings of the card by making them faster or adding more memory.

I don't have preference for nVidia or AMD or manufacturer for that matter. I just buy the technology that I want at the time. For ex: if I wanted 3 monitors and physx, I would buy an AMD card with at least 2 GB of RAM for the high res, and put an nVidia card in the second PCI-e slot for the Physx.

Just personal preference.

intel is prob wise, as long as it's like i5, but i'd take a phenom 955 over an i3 2100, all good games will benefit from the 2 cores, since games like bf3 and i'm pretty sure skyrim too will be threaded to use the cores, so the phenom will get more fps, but the ati/amd and nvidia part just comes down to what you plan to spend on it, each price range has a different recomendation, below 150 is generally going to go amd for performance, and above there it goes back and forth depending on deals/sales and rebates.

ok thanks im probably going to go with a new mobo and intel i5k so i can overclock like crazy but first some more fans, i took the side off when the pc was running and its a little toasty in there =s, a decent 100mm fan on the side panel and another 50mm on this heatsink that gets very hot should bring it down quite abit.

what's your case got now, link to it would be nice, but it should be fine, best thing would be to get like a coolermaster 212 for low end cooling, if you want to hit like 4.5+ghz then go for an antec h2o's or a corsair h50/h60 or if you don't mind the price even higher, for the mobo i'd look for a gigabyte z68 like the 2 i will link below, but you will prob need new ram too, should prob just put up a new build/upgrade thread.

well my mates are begging me to put my price up to $400AUD to get all of what i talked about (i5K, 4gb DDR3 ram, MOBO) so i can also get a new case for a better mobo and cooling.

That mobo is a quite abit more expensive there than were i would get it from, besides I need a new case anyway as the one i have now is too small and the mobo is only 300x300 so quite small.
