What type of Computer should I get?

First Req: must be compatible with Samsung 30'' monitor (able to drive it at least somewhat close to its native res).

Other than that, I really don't do anything that requires a high performance machine. I would like to get a simple computer that comes with all the anti-virus stuff etc. I basically play poker, no more than 8 tables usually, watch movies, e-mail, etc. I guess the most taxing thing I could possibly do is play around 9 tables while running Pokertracker(stat/data collecting program) and a HUD(another data program) at the same time.

Thanks guys. Oh and budget is about 1000ish max.

For store bought computers i like HP, your not going to find a computer with full blown year of AV though... you can get AVG for free if your worried about cash. As far as your monitor goes that shouldnt be a problem, just make sure the video card on the computer has the connection for your monitor... its going to be VGA or DVI most likely.

Well the Monitor is DUAL LINK DVI-D, how will I be able to identify whether the computer has this?(sorry computer illiterate).

Hi Josh,

I am a poker player myself and also know my way well with computers.

If you want a working machine to play poker on your monitor, you just need a video card that will support it.

I suggest you look around for general video card from ATI or Nvidia. Till it supports your monitor refresh rate and desired resolution to use, you should be ok with any computer under $1000.

As poker player I would try to get a silent computer so you can keep your focus on the game without being distract by any noises.

If you want further info about computer hardware in general, you can take a look at this site.

Hi again,

For viruses, just use Firefox browser instead of IE. It is build against virus and it is the less hacked.

To know if the computer support your screen, you have to look at the back panel of the computer case at the video connector level. Look if you have that DVI connector.

Hope this helped

Using firefox is not a substitute for an anti virus... you don't get hacked through a browser anyway, you get hacked through the internet... there is a difference. firefox has less exploits but that doesn't mean you wont get a virus in windows.

Thanks all for the responses, I appreciate them very much. I'm headed to BestBuy right now actually, so I'll let you know how it goes. Oh and popeye, I will probably get another monitor or two but right now a 30" is about all I need.
