Probably the easiest thing would be get a wireless router and a wireless card for your computer upstairs. I'm rather partial to Buffalo products, especially their WHR-54G and WHR-HP-54G routers. Both are very fine routers that are 100% compatible with DD-WRT. My dad has their newest router (G128 or something) but it's performance seems much less than my HP-G54.

If you MUST have wired, there's nothing really specific I have to offer. Most routers are pretty typical. Linksys may be a good bring to look into, though their cheaper wireless routers have really gone down hill. I'm not sure how their new wired products are.

thanks for post. I have a linksys router... infact 2. The one broke about 1-2 weeks after i got it and the other one was also broken beacause i cant even config it. So im Done with Linksys wireless routers. How muchdo you think a typical wireed router is? do i need a Hub? What is a Hub? lol. thanks

Thanks

Dan

You don't need a hub. Just get a wired router. Brand doesn't really matter, there are all about the same. One should cost in the $50 range. Cat 5 cable will carry better than any internet speed available so, it it will work just fine. No need to speed more than you need to.

If you need help configuring the router you have, we could help. You could use it as a wired router.

Let us now how it goes.

I agree, most any router would be fine. Brands don't really matter asside from firmware. Some may have more stable firmware, or more regularly updated firmware.

Also, realize you can get a wireless router and disable the wireless. I'm half-tempted to recommend this with the price of some wireless routers
