What is the difference between USB ports that have the solid square connector and onces that have the square connector with 4 pinholes? See pics for reference.

eSATA is longer than that. That just looks like a standard USB port. I'm not sure why there are holes in it, but it looks like anything that would go in the holes would just hit the same pins that are on the outside too. What is the model of computer?

It is a work computer so i'm not too interested in making it work. The real reason I want to know is because my head unit in my car has one of these 4 pin USB connectors and I can't get it to recognize any USB sticks, so I was wondering if the 4 pin USB port takes a special type of USB device?

It's standard USB. If they had any additional "features" they'd more than likely have something printed to the side. The ports are probably made from different manufacturers and differ slightly in design, but their functionality should be identical.

The small port is not an usb port. it is either firewire port or optical sound port. if you have the manual you can checkit or goto the computer manufacture site to see if the manual available.
best regards.

after look at my computer manual. the symbol for the small port is firewire ieee 1394 port.
