What video card should I use

Hi! I'm looking for a video card to replace the one I have. I'm using a nvidia GeForce 8400 GS. I actually have 2 of them in 2 different computers, but there is a couple of problems. In the one computer, an AMD 3700+ with a MSI motherboard and 1 gb ram, it'll work for a while, then everything goes into red---everything is hued with red and it's tough to see the screen. I can shut it off for a couple of weeks, start it up, and it'll work fine for a couple of days, then it does it all over again. The other computer is a dual-core AMD 4200+ with an ASUS motherboard and 2 gb ram. I've just had the screen flicker (kind of jump---it's tough to describe bur it's definitely in the video)a couple of times the last 2 days, so I'm wondering about that card. What's a cheap---$30-$40 card that will work well with my systems? I'm not a gamer but do watch an occasional video. I also tried to download linux 3d nvidia drivers (I'm messing around with Ubuntu with a dual boot) and the screen was so messed up I had to reinstall. I'm looking at a used 8600 GT in ebay for $30. Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

what psu do you have? Please download PC Wizard and install it from my sig. Run it and click FILE, SAVE AS and click OK. Copy the contents out of that text file into this thread. Also, record what psu model and make into this thread. Take the side of the PSU and read the sticker if you are unsure.

Then we can let you know what is going on.
