For gaming purposes, XP or vista home premium?

Reason i ask is because i hear alot of bad about vista, my soon new build specs are in sig

Besides the limit on backward capability between versions of Windows your sig shows the 64bit release of Vista to add to that. You can expect many desktop applications as well as many games may not even install there. Many made complaints from trying to game while running a beta release of either RC1 or RC2. But those were strictly "evaluation only" releases and not the finished product. That goes for just about any beta for any program or OS.

Some rather old games were found to actually run better on the 32bit version of Home Premium here. Fear, Prey, Half Lfe 1: Source have run good while HL2 and Episode One have seen some problems. EP1 saw crashed with the beta sound drivers there. The latest Steam update caused a problem of sound loss despite final sound drivers from Creative being released where that is lost as soon as you enter the next game map. There are some lags due to the added and larger features now seen while some are now favoring it over XP. Here its still a secondary not primary OS in use since it is still only a few months old.

so you think i should get like XP Home for $90...then upgrade later when they put out a service pack were all or most bugs have been worked out? im mostly going to be gaming and doing some multitasking ect ect.

XP Home does have a strong edge over XP Pro for gaming. The one thing now improved in Vista is the ctrl-alt-del function will get you out of any game freezes unlike XP where you often still had to hit the reset button when something locks up. A new blue screen appears with the option to shutdown, log off, or simply use the task manager to regain the desktop. That does work well.

As far as seeing any SP1 or SP2 you can no longer expect those since MS now has weekly updates when available on mondays for security fixes and of course their own Windows Defender now seen in Vista. Thrills! Spyware Terminator and Ad-AdAware will blast right past that even Spybot S&D! With the intended 64bit version you wouldn't have a worry on running 4gb or more of memory there. But if you have a ton invested in desktop apps as well as games then a possible dual boot for the moment could also work.

While waiting for new DX10 games and newer versions of softwares you could still use XP to run the older games and apps that may see problems on Vista especially with the 64bit version there or even XP Pro 64bit. That while costing a little more for two OSes allows you to get familiear and compare Vista along with having the version best suited for softwares and gaming. To say not get Vista or XP would be in the air since one is only a few months old and still needs some bugs? worked out as well as more drivers for hardwares that will be coming to update the initial releases of those.

Yeah, i may just go ahead and grab vista....and just keep it up to date and all and pray for the best. i know this has been ask SEVERAL times....64bit or 32bit vista? quick answer in your own opinion :)

And you have to have vista for Dx10, right?

vista i see no probs with it really, just need patches or drivers , not that hard to find. plus ur more up to date in windows so ur more prepared for the future

ok and also for 32 bit i heard there are more drivers and patches than 64 bit

Ok, what do prebuilt systems come with? and will i see any differences between the two? i may go with 32bit since it is more common and would more likely have more drivers...

64bit even with the XP Pro 64bit edition is still early since the market has been geared for 32bit over the last several years since 98 replaced the last 16bit version namely 95 not 95 Plus that included the OSR2 32bit support. The availabily of 64bit apps is mainly desktop at the current time. Eventually you will start seeing 64bit versions or support for 64bit brought about for games.

At this time if you are saturated with 32bit games and apps just moving upto a 32bit release of Vista will see the dilemna of replacing some games or apps due to it being a newer version of Windows. Much is still geared for the ME/3000/XP environment. DX10 is included in Vista while DX9 will still go on for the current games out. Most new system will see only the 32bit versions while Dell is now even offering XP at your specific request. It's likely you could also order it with a 64bit version as well.

Thanks, i guess ill go with 32bit vista to assure that i shouldn't have any or much compatibility problems...seeing that it will be a long time before theres a demand for 64bit apps

Dont go with the 32-Bit version of Windows, unless you dont mind buying the 64-Bit version later this year.

I've run both and I've never had an issue where a program or game will run on the 32-bit version, but not the 64-bit version.

Again, if you buy the x86 version, sure it will be fine for a while, but within this year you will want to upgrade to over 4GB of RAM (which you cant with a 32-Bit OS), and im sure there will be 64-Bit only programs out there that you wont be able to run.

Get vista 64bit if you can afford it get vista ultimate 64bit which has some very cool extras and I think is worth it.

I have been running vista ultimate 64bit for a month and like it a lot it's fast and stable. I have had no issues with drivers or software.

Almost all of my games run great on vista i am only having problems with battlefield 2142.
