i just got a "new" laptop. ah..well, it was for free, so i cant complain.
anyway, the laptop itself is a
Compaq v300
CPU - Celeron A 500MHz
RAM - 64 Mb pc-100 RAM ( @ 67MHz )
4Mb Ait Rage-mobility
5Gb harddisc
CD-ROM drive
floppy drive

I'm going to upgrade the RAM anyway. ill buy 1 256Mb stick ( or 2 128Mb ones, depends on whats cheaper)
but, is it possible to upgrade the CPU? and what would be the maximum speed it supports. i have looked, but havnt found it yet.
and same about the HD.. whats the maximum?
does anyone here knows any good websites to get such info?

Ya, I agree with maroon1, please don't waste your money upgrading that laptop. Save alittle more money and buy a new one.

come on folks, there are load of uses for this machine with a little cash for an upgrade.
And he said he got it for free so it not like he doesn't already have another rig. He just wants to know what to update on this one

@Archangel
This rig would be a good home server for something low use, maybe a printer severs or file server, heck even a media server if you so like
You will need to get a new HDD - probably an external one, internal will work as well but you may have to pay more and be looking at a issues will compatibility

Upgrading ram will allow you to squeeze windows on there if your not unix happy

As for the CPU - dont bother.... seriously

well.. il be using the laptop fer school ( office 2003 :) and matlab )
and i install a program so i can hook it up to every volkwagen, and read out error codes out of the engine management computer. so its not going under real stress.

but a RAM upgrade ( what whould i do? 256 + 64?. or would it be worth putting 2 x 256 into it?) and a HDD upgrade would do you think?

and for the CPU.. well i didnt excpect much of it either.. but it is faster as my old k6 :D
