what'll happen if I leave the computer on, without shutting it down
(because I'm afraid that I won't get my Word document back again - due to the problems of earlier today - if I shut it down - Word doesn't open - except for "sometimes" it offers me Safe Mode - so I now have the document before me)

so I figured that I could leave it all turned on while working on the document over the next few days

but isn't the screen supposed to go black if I haven't touched any keys in a certain amount of time - to save the screen?

what length of time does this usually happen (it has happened sometimes when I have the computer turned on and don't anything for a while, but it hasn't happened so far if I check re: the Word document)

what can I do to protect things - but not close Word?

right click the desktop, go to properties, go to screen saver > power settings > turn monitor off <after 5 minutes> system standby <never> hibernate <never>

You can turn the monitor off, and leave everything else the way it is. The screen only displays the info to you. It has no input back to your computer. I would save it, and then turn the screen off. The computer is fine to stay on the rest of the day.

thanks

okay, I went through the properties (and all those things were already indicated except for "Hibernation")

So, it says that Hibernation is "when computer hibernates it stores whatever it has in memory on hard disk and then shuts down. When computer comes out of hibernation it returns to previous state"
Do I check the box for Hibernation or not? If I check the box, will it shut down the computer? If it shuts it down, will my Word document still be there?

black screen works now okay

Leaving your computer on will probably do it more good than constantly switching it on and off. It won't hurt one bit. Just make sure the room isn't baking hot. As for the monitor going black / turning off after a set period of time, that's probably a feature you want to turn back on as, if your not at the computer, why waste power with the monitor if you aren't staring at it? It doesn't affect anything switching off and immediately powers back on when you move your mouse.

Rove.

one of my computers is a game server and has been running constantly for 8 months just fine all you need to do is turn the screen off with the power button on the screen or you could save the document to floppy or upload it to something like www.mediamax.com its easy to use and free.
