What's a good starter tablet?

Hi everyone. I'm looking for a good Android tablet for an eighty-year old. Something for educational games and apps, and the occasional car racing game as well :)

It doesn't have to be the latest and greatest, and preferably not too expensive. I've seen different models of Tabs (A, E, S2, etc.) and I don't know the difference between them. Can someone explain what I should be looking for in terms of model number for the Samsungs?

Any recommendations would be welcome. Probably don't want to go much older than a year or so, but again, doesn't have to be released yesterday, and preferably not $600+.

Thanks!

Wow, how do you know about the sale? Also, can the Google Play Store be used on it?
I heard about it online, and by default it does not come with the Google Play Store, it comes with the Amazon store, but I believe you can side load it.

I'd personally look for a refurnished Nexus 7 over a Kindle. Or buy a new Nexus 9. The Nexus 9 is only $310 on Amazon right now for the 16GB version.

Thanks. Unfortunately we are looking for an LTE version and that only comes in 32GB, which ups the price considerably.

Edit: Also, we're looking for something larger than 7", preferably around 9-10".

Hard to pass up a $35 tablet if that's the size you are looking for, but the Nexus 9 for $199 is a great deal.

How about the Nexus 7? Is that still a good tablet for general use? (I'm asking for me now, not for a child.) I hesitate to buy one that's so old, but my S4 is about the same age and still going strong. For myself, I think I'd actually prefer the 7" size, and the specs still seem pretty good.

Yeah, for that price I'm considering getting one for myself and figuring out what to do with it later :) But I'd rather have the Google/Android ecosystem, not Amazon's. I use Amazon for most stuff, but I don't want to use two different app stores and feel like my phone and tablet aren't connected. I'm considering the Nexus 7 (2013 model), but I'm not sure how good it would be now. The Nexus 9 for $199 seems unbelievable. If I hadn't missed that, I might have jumped on it. :(

There is a lot of developer support for the Amazon Fire tablet, so with a few tweaks you can get it with the Google Play Store and get rid of all the Amazon crap.
