USB2 is faster than Firewire400. Although Firewire enables you to keep a constant transfer rate where-as USB2 does not, so its arguable. And yes there is a Firewire800.

Yeah, Firewire is much better for continuous data streams, hence the reason why USB wireless cards suck. (aka don't buy one if you are looking for one and can avoid it... )

stuff like live video, thats why digital video cameras use firewire, aswell as external hard drives and some dvd/cd burners
