What's important in a monitor?

I got my monitor around October 2006, and I've been using it since.

It's a 17 " LCD monitor by LG. If I recall correctly I got a nice deal for it.

Here are the specs:

Brightness: 300 cd/m2
Resolution: 1280 x 1024
High Contrast Ratio: 700:1
Response Time: 8ms
Warranty: 3 Years

I've been thinking of getting a new one but I don't know what is considered a good monitor, what I should look for and how much is too expensive.

I'm hoping over 20 inches so I can see some improvement.

Thanks in advance.

edit:

is this monitor good? sorry its in polish but you can see specs if you click parametry techniczne

Simply, you want a lower refresh rate (<5ms), 5 or 2 is good. Also a high contrast ratio is good (10,000:1 is great while 1000:1 not so good).

You can get really into it and worry about what panel it has in it, but if its just for general use i wouldnt bother. In LCD's i always but Samsung. Best warrenty and always a good quality screen.

I'd tell you about that Asus screen if the site were in English. :P
