What's in the future for SSD *Solid State Disks*

Do you think in the near future these discs will be worth getting. I read a lot of bad reviews on these things. I'm looking for a new (gaming) hard drive , to increase performance a tad, also in the near future. I was thinking about a Raptor but what about those SSD's?

Oh star wars is on.

As of now they aren't worth it. The performance alone isn't anything to brag about, read/write speeds are very low, the only thing going for them really in a desktop computer is that it has no delay when accessing files. For the price, don't get them, only in an ultra-mobile laptop are they somewhat worth while.

As for in the future, I'm sure they will become the norm, but it will take several years IMO.

So if someone could find a good price on one, it wouldn't be a nice alternative to a HDD for saving on batter life, in a laptop?

Thought I'd ask here, instead of making a new post :)

i was reading up in computer shopper magazine on some SSD reviews and apparently they are not as good as theyre made out to be.

the read speed was very fast but the write speed was not all that impressive.

Well, Than just drop on of those in a desktop than. Is that possible?

SSD's do consume less power, and aren't susceptible to vibrations like normal hard drives are, which is why they are great in ultra-portable laptops that would be carried around everywhere.

like omega said, at the mo, they simply aint worth the price, in a year or two, yes they will and most new computer will use them. save some money and get a couple of raptors or velociraptors if you really want a few extra Mb/s

My friend's friend has a SSD and he says it flies. I haven't really seen one in use before, so I can't say what he's comparing it to.

Not as good as they're made out to be? Try the intel SSD alone and you'll think you're running an OC'ed i7 with ddr3 2000mhz.

Every real world performance benchmark I've seen shows little improvement over the fastest mechanical drives, such as a Velociraptor. Definitely not worth the price with a desktop, but easily a 2-3 inch increase in e-penis. For some, that's all they need. ;)

I'd rather get a pair of 15K RPM SAS drives in RAID 0, which is still probably cheaper per GB.
