It says i only have 135MB of free RAM. Firefox is taking up 506MB?

Yeah this has been a big problem. Mozilla denies that Firefox has memory leaking problems, they prefer to call it "allocator-thrashing". Nonetheless Firefox can be a bitch on the memory. Kill the process and start anew, that's what i do.

Is it always taking up so much though? Normally Firefox will slowly build itself up to that amount, if you're experiencing something more immediate, it might be a different problem.

Remove some of your unneeded toolbars and extensions and that should help bring FFs RAM usage down. It still needs to be restarted occasionally though, as said by hermeslyre, it has a memory leak and the longer it's open the worse it gets.

There is some way that you can modify Mozilla so that it clears most of what it's cached when you minimize, instead of having to close and reopen. I'll see if I can find a how-to.

actually, instead, try opera. it's the same thing but with no memory leaks and has cool little bells and whistles that don't take much ram. my favorite part are the 'gestures.' say you have a tab open and you want to close it. you hold down right click, go down and then right and it's closed. or you want a new tab? hold right click and pull down. amazing!
