whats the best processor?

i found only recently that processor's power is not only dictated by the number of ghz but also the type of processor itself (for example, 2 ghz pentium4 does not equal a dual core 2ghz processor).
Can somebody give me a list of desktop processors from greatest speed to lower speed (like 10 years back, not like from beginning of computer history), in both AMD and pentium.

i think i have the list for pentium down.. see if its wrong or not. (from fastest to least)
1.dual core
2.pentium d
3.pentium m
4.pentium 4

no idea what the list is for AMD

1. Core i7
2. Xeon
3. Core 2 Quad Extreme
4. Core 2 Duo Extreme
5. Core 2 Quad
6. Core 2 Duo
7. Pentium Duo
8. Pentium D
9. Pentium 4
10. Pentium 3
11. Pentium 2
12. Pentium Pro
13. Pentium

1. Core i7
2. Xeon
3. Core 2 Quad Extreme
4. Core 2 Duo Extreme
5. Core 2 Quad
6. Core 2 Duo
7. Pentium Duo
8. Pentium D
9. Pentium 4
10. Pentium 3
11. Pentium 2
12. Pentium Pro
13. Pentium

is that the list for the pentium processors only? any ideas for the athlon?

i wouldn't count xeon in there at all, its just a binned chip, i don't know if you want to include core i7 yet or not, it is shaping up to be the fastest, but go on wikipedia and type in amd or something, that should bring up a whole list of processors(not sure if they are listed in order of speed or not, though)

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is pretty simple. For example the Athlon 2200 is slower than the Phenom 9650. Just look for the model number and that will generally tell you how old the processor is.

For AMD:

Athlon64 Phenom (Quad core)
Athlon64 Phenom (Tri core)
Athlon64 X2 (Dual Core)
Athlon64 X2 e
Athlon64 X2
Sempron LE
Sempron
Athlon XP
Duron

something like that :D
