What's the best upgrade for my system?

What's a cheap and cheerful way to make my machine faster?

I have a Toshiba 4010CDT laptop from 1999, with a PII 266 processor, 4gig HD, 32meg ram, a wireless card, running windows 98. I have a wireless router on a cable modem. I only use my system for surfing the web, and really can't afford to just buy a new system.

I have ordered another 128meg of memory which will max out my machine, and have removed stuff like screensavers, wallpaper, removed windows features like notepad. paint, calculator, essentially trying to strip the machine down to bare bones. I don't need an external hard drive yet, I don't have much on my harddrive.

What else can I do?

Thanks
Doug

Hmmm

Well simply for browsing you should not need to do much. I do not see the point in spendng money on something that old. I would rather remain with more ram (good move) and keep it, trying to eliminate un-needed startup programs.

Just in case you have not done this yet... get a good spyware removing program, like spybot s&d or something. And remove all programs from startup that you can, there are alot of websites that show you how to do this.

Since you've got an older laptop I suspect it wont be using the standardized SODIMMS. As such you're going to have to buy memory made specifically for you laptop.

Other than what you've outlined plus the usual spyware/startup checks, you've done pretty much everything doable :)
