Whats the difference between a computer and console?

As the thread implies, what is the difference between a computer and a gamin cosnole, especialy the ps3 and xbox360?

It seems that they are virtualy built off of the same platforms, a motherboard, hard drive, graphics card. Besides, you would be paying the price of computer and getting a console.

The machines are similar, as you pointed out. Consoles just play games, but can be made to run Linux if you so feel inclined to play at that. Computers are a little more expensive, more versatile, and also harder to maintain...spyware, updates etc.

Okay, I see that. But if your gonna pay 500 for a console anyway just for games, why not just get a computer, which can also do games and hundreds of other things.
Sure you might get better graphics on a console, after all, thats what they are for, so just upgrade your computer graphics card, you end up with the same thing.

That is my feeling as well, and is why I do not have a console :D
There are some games only available for a particular console, and if you are a serious gamer that may persuade you to get that particular platform.

better graphics on a console? I dont think so. PC gaming is what is pressing the limits of computers today... consoles are just ripping the technology..

Yeah... PC games are always going to be ahead of console games.

I would hope so, i just built a nice new comp for games, and lost interest in consoles, thats just extra money, and I can play all my games on PC, not to mention, upgrade it too for newer ones :}

It's true that consoles use the same/similar technology, but if you get a $150 dollar ps2, you're going to get a hell of a lot more graphical capabilities than you would out of a $150 computer; not to mention that games are custom tailored to consoles, so they'll run smoothly on the consoles, whereas you might have to upgrade your computer, or reduce the quality by a decent amount, to be able to play it smoothly.

Despite this, I'm a PC gamer. The first person shooter genre should be made, by law, exclusive to PC. I can't stand FPS' on consoles (way too difficult)! I just get emulators, and run console games on those.

the only advantage i can think of consoles over pc is that you dont have to waste money for upgrading your machine.the console games come tailor made for the consoles.
although i think if pc is better off specs wise why not just get an equivalent emulator and buy the console games :D :D

Oh yeah... also, the feel of a keyboard and mouse is so much more appealing than a controller... hah.

Yeah, well go buy a nice controlor for 20$ and plug it in, instead of paying 500$ just for a console. most controllors for consoles you can just modifry the plug and then it will work with your PC, I have done it(mostly by soldering)with a SNES,N64 and PS1 controller.

Like eveyrone has said....Consoles at most in history (the succesful ones) have been priced at $300.......getting a good gaming PC costs upwards of $1000 ....with a top dog retailing in the $4,000 region. According ot nVIDIA, the ps3 will feature the fastest video card out so for a while, ps3 games will be better than computer games (HD too!) Also, there is a severe lack of quality titles on a PC....i could cout on 1 hand...MAYBE 2 titles that are worth me putting down $50. Computers are where i get my online gaming kicks really....unless we are talking about Half Life 2 which brought me back to computer gaming. Oh yea, and consoles are specifiically made for gaming therefore all the parts in the machine run much better for the single task they have...GAMING!

I think that PC's are better game wise than consoles. Sure the new PS3/XBOX360 have pimp graphics but where do you think they were made? A computer! Computers to me will always have an advantage over consoles becuz they have always been able to maintain better FPS ratings at higher resolutions. . . but with the new gaming era that we are questing into, my comment might be wrong.

The only real advantage PCs had over consoles was being able to play online with other people, but that has obviously changed. Even if the PCs have better graphics I can tell you that most people dont just stare at the water and say, "wow that looks much more real than my console". Most people are into how the game actually plays.
