What's the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?

At one time all optical drives were either + or - with the higher quality and sometimes higher price seen on the +rs. Most drives now are fully compatible with both types of media.

I think they are pretty much the same, all I know is that DVD + R is better for data and DVD - R is better for encoded videos to be played in DVD players, apparently it reduces compatibility issues.

When playing back video burned to bith types here with WMP 10/11, PowerDVD, or other pc type players you won't usually see any difference there. For other types of systems like a regular home dvd player with Dolby and enhanced playback features you would see the difference more pronounced there.

A game is generally seen on one type of dvd only. Some games will have either a single dvd or a set of cds for installation. For some older games you saw a two cd set with one left in the drive after installation to run from. Some games may use a +r but most are designed for a wiser range to run on +r, -r, and +/-r type drives. Most now are capatible to both types.
