Whats the difference in socket size?

The title pretty much says it all, but also which socket is better. I do alot of recording, movie watching, and a little bit of gaming. I am in the works of building a new computer and want it to be nice and fast, and not be super outdated right away, but I don't want to buy the newest fastest thing, because they are overprices IMO. Thanks

Im thinking more along the lines of something AMD compatiable. But I am mostly reffering to the terms like socket 939, socket 754 socket 775, so on. What is the difference?
 
could i bother you to recommend me some good ones, or a link that lists many. Also some processors too? Thanks a bunch
