My computer is used mainly for school work with a bit of gaming, halo, battlefield vietnam. i'm planning to upgrade it to 1 gig of ram, from 512, and i was wondering what's the difference between a 30 dollar stick of ram to a 100 dollar stick of ram.

30 dollar stick of ram to a 100 dollar stick of ram.
latencies, overclockability, stability at high vdimms, presence/absence of heat spreaders

For your needs however, not much

Lol

Often, you may find that although the above criteria are true, sometimes RAM with the same qualities etc. is much cheaper because it is not made by some of the most famous RAM manufacturers. Sometimes you end up paying more for a brandname rather than something extra.

JAN :D

Hehe, that true of everything.
Top manufacturers spend more on r&d, wereas lesser companies may just copy technology. Thus the top guys need to absorb these costs into there product.

To get the most bang for your buck, you should go with Corsair ValueSelect for about $40-$45. Or you can get the cheap stuff for $30-$40. (and i saw a good improvement in memory scores with Corsair ValueSelect over the Wintec Ram.)

yeah ram is really cheap today, i think i'm just gonna go with the 30-40 cheapo stuff, dont need the good stuff. Can you add a ram heatsink on by youself?
