What's the fastest CPU that will work with this motherboard?

Sorry for the dumb question but I don't know what exactly will work with this motherboard. I don't know much about it either except that it's an Asus socket 939 and it currently has a 3800+. Everest can't pick up the name of it, under "motherboard" it has name as "unknown", all it says is that it's a socket 939. Does that mean any socket 939 CPU will work? I'd love some suggestions, links to newegg appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The fastest stock model is the FX series with the FX-60 as the one dual core model in the performance line there. But first you have to know what model board in order to look over the actual specifications to see what it supports. You can buy an FX-60 for around $250 or under now, so they are very reasonable.

That's not bad. I haven't really kept an eye on the FX line. I mostly use the X2 line processors with my builds. I just upgraded to the 5200+ X2 last night actually. This thing is smokin from my 4600+ x2...

The FX series are the performance models for the 939 line. The FX-60 is the only dual core model and has held it's price up until lately. When I see that or an Opteron 185 drop down further I will consider grabbing one OEM even if by that time I'm still not planning out a new build. I paid $180 for 3 o 4 Socket A models at one point for the last build. Those were all Atholon XP models there. The Atholon 1800+ was seen on the prior build before the 2600+, 3000+, and 3200+ found a new home.

Okay, thanks for the opinions. i am upgrading video card at the same time so on second though I need to stay under $300. What would you guys suggest between these two?

Also do these things come with thermal paste or do they have thermal coating now or what's the deal with the cooling? I see they come with a heatsink and fan, should that be upgraded or is what they give you okay? Also will the chip be drop and go or will have i have to mess around in BIOS after installing it? The motherboard came from an off the shelf PC. Thanks.

You realize that the Opteron line of cpus is mainly a server type even while having several 939 models don't you? For gaming/OCing you would be better off with the 4600+ X2 or Opteron 165 there. Here with a stock setup built more as a work horse the Opteron 185 or FX-60 is choice. I multitask and game without OCing most of the time to start with. For multitasking as well as occasional gaming on a stock build you could run either while the 4800+ sees the lower price tag there.

No I didn't know the Opteron was for servers. It looks like I'll stick to the X2 4800+, the problem is it's out of stock. tigerdirect.com doesn't have it either. I might have to pay retail for it.

You first have to understand what they are primarily designed for. Whether it's a Socket 939 or 940 model they are intended more for work horse builds and multitasking as well as server cases.
