Whats the long term damage

So say with my usb and all of my hdd's... if when i needed to take them out of my computer and i didnt eject them safely, what could the long term effects be? could i damage my usb/hdd's? i know people always say you have to take em out safely.

i know this is probs a stupid question but i am interested! anyone had any bad experinces they would like to share upon?

I believe the "safely unplug your USB" procedure is for old USB devices... while for newer USB devices they are more stable and so you can just unplug it from your computer without any effect on the device as well as on your computer...
 
Ever heard of "hot-swappable"? May get an error msg for this though. You don't have problems with an Ipod when it says "Do not Disconnect"

That is there so if you are transferring files from your harddrive to your flashdrive and you pull it out while it is still doing that the data could become corrupted thats why that is there to safely eject the drive to stop any files from transferring and nothing becomes corrupted.

However I rarely safely eject it and I have never had any problems with it.
 
The main purpose of the "safely eject" option I beleive is just to be sure the device isn't still in use. Windows 2000 was pretty bad about this... Besides the error, it sould sometimes use a "delay write". So if you copied something kind of small to the drive the pull the plug, it probably won't even be there...

However, for XP and higher, you should be just fine as long as the drive isn't in use.
 
USB 2.0 drives are especially better at being 'pull outable' as they react faster to changes, i always used 'Safely eject' anyway these days as i have lost 2 USBs to pre-maturely pulling them out :(
 
thanks guys! i do this anyway! its just a pain when you have a million hdd's and other usb devices connected to your computer! im down for the XP. thanks :)
