How do i figure out whats the max ram my comp can get? It's 512mb right now and I'm hoping it can go way higher. I'm not sure what info is needed so I'm going to throw random info, lol.

Microsoft Windows XP
Professionl Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Sony
76487-643-7213323-23270

AMD Athlon(tm) XP
1.29 GHz, 512 MB of Ram

and is this processor even good? I got this comp from my brother. Not to sure about processors

what model is the computer?

is it a laptop or desktop?

what mothboard does it have?

If it only ahve 512MB of RAM then you will most probably only have 32 bit vista, so 4GB would be the most you could have that the operating system could handle.

The limiting factor though is the motherboard, if you can find out the model of either the system or of the motherboard then we can find it from google and then find out what type of RAM and how much of that type of RAM it can handle

The processor isn't bad, it is perfect for the system but if you upgrade the RAM to anywhere over about 1GB then it will cause a bottleneck (it iwll be the limit of your system) so upgarding any further without upgrading your processor will be pointless

It's a desktop, I dont know how to find out the motherboard. WHen my brother gave it to me he said there was 4 slots for ram, not sure if that matters. So how do i figure out what the motherboard is?

My old Athlon XP could take 1gb i believe. that was on an Abit K7A or something like that board though, it was a decent board, but 1gb was typical. -maybe- 2gb since it's got 4 ram slots. but an 8 year old cpu with over a gig of ram, like aastii said, is just a waste imo.
we def need more info though.

Alright to find out the model number take the side of your case, it will just be a couple screws at the back probably, look at the motherboard and usually next to the northbridge heatsink (the one just below the CPU) or inbetween/above the PCI slots (the ones that have the graphics cards, network cards, spound cards etc plugged into, at the bottom left of the motherboard) will be the make/model number of the motherboard.

It can vary in size being either quite large and then small model number or vice versa, or it can all be small or it can all be fairly large

Hey, crucial.com didnt work for me for some reason. =(. I didn't know where to find the model # by listening to Aastii's instructions. SO I just jotted down a bunch of #'s and i hope you can tell what the model is with this...

STicker with a barcode:
SN: AN35NJ49010E40602659

Black square in the middle:
nVIDIA
nforce2
MCP
FB8847.1 0346A4
C KOREA

some black rectangle:
TD1603C
0352

Silver Sticker:
Phoenix Bios
D686 BIOS
Phoenix 1998
153583719

I hope one of these is the model #....thanks!

Unfortunately no :P

it isn't a model "number" per se, it is the manufacturer, then the model, so, i will give mine as an example.

ASUS-P5N-%20E-SLI-review.jpg

Mine is a little different to every other motherboard i have had in the past when it comes to finding the manufacturer and model.

You will see below the northbridge it says ASUS, that is the manufacturer.

Then, next to the processor, tot eh right of it, it says P5N-E SLI, that is the model

It will not be on a sticker or the black squares, rectangles etc. these are chips, the one to the bottom right is the south bridge (sb) (sometimes there is only one just above this, it is the nb and sb combined), the one below the processor is the north bridge (nb), the others are things like for sound, raid controllers, HDD data transfer etc.

To give you another example, this is one of my old boards that i no longer have, sold it on about a month ago:

It is hard to make out, but if you look below the north bridge there is a box, it has the FCC logo in it, that is there the model number for that one is (microstar MS-6701). Both are together there, but very small...see what i was saying by there can be a size difference ;)
