What's the score with Java / WinXP

Can anyone enlighten me?

I designed my homepage a couple of years ago on my Win2K machine and included some java applets and everything looked OK on my home machine and work machine (Win NT). When I bought a new PC with WinXP Home on, none of the java apps will display (shows a tiny red cross instead) so I downloaded the Sun runtime system but they still don't display. According to my control panel I have Java 2 Runtime Environment SE v1.4.2_05 and Java Runtime 1.1 installed. Any ideas anyone...?

Microsoft and Sun simply don't like each other, so if you are going to use 1 technology, don't think of integrating it with the other, this will cause trouble like the ones you are experiencing right now.

As to the problem, do you have service pack 1 or 2? If you have, it might have some sort of Java blocking or something like that. Another question, where did you download the Java runtime environment from? I hope you downloaded it using the Sun website.

Hi Narafa, thanks very much for your speedy reply

I am using service pack 2 and I did download the Java thing from the Sun website - according to their website they were under the impression that it would work Ok with XP but perhaps they were wrong...

I have tinkered with my IE settings in an attempt to get it working, so I don't think it is a settings issue, just can't understand why it worked so well on the older Windows systems - XP is the only system I know of that it won't work under.

Is it a browser issue and would it work Ok if I were to switch to Mozilla Firefox - I've been toying with the idea for a while? Also, of the two Java services I have installed, do I really need them both or can one be removed?

Thanks for any help you can give.

get firefox, its better.. the only thing ie is good for is windows update.. firefox has plugins for java and everything else, so just get that

I agree with foxshox, try firefox, it might help fixing the problem.

Although I don't like any browser on the market as I am convinced that there is no perfect browser, but I use IE just to avoid conflicts if I installed firefox, but this doesn't mean that firefox is bad. IE & Firefox are the best 2 browsers on the market at the moment.

Back again to your problem, you mentioned that the old version of the windows was XP without SP2, and everything was working fine there, am I right? Then I think that the problem is mainly concerned about the SP2 as I guessed. You might want to try turning off the windows firewall, if you have it on, and try again. I personally hate the updated firewall of the SP2, I have it disabled all the time.

There are two types of Java runtime, 1 from Sun Java and 2. from Microsoft. Get the number 1. from https://sdlcweb2b.sun.com/ECom/EComActionServlet;jsessionid=B0A80A2FF1CB1C34652086C110DDC27E

Ya sorry about that, he didn't have win XP SP2 anyway.

The Java runtime by Microsoft is not available anymore, try to get it out of Microsoft website.
