My friend's computer is really screwed up. He has all kinds of something, viruses, spyware or whatever. I ran an HJT scan but nothing is checked. Here's the HJT file.

Quite a few infections showing here.

1. Please download this file - Combofix to your desktop
2. Double click ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Once done, please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to C:\SDFix

You may wish to print out these instructions or copy them to a notepad document since you will be unable to access the Internet while in Safe Mode to read from this site.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode (tap F8 just before Windows starts to load and select Safe Mode from the list).
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum in your next reply

Please navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and rename HijackThis.exe to scanner.exe (or anything else that's not HijackThis.exe) and post a new HijackThis log as well.

Please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • The SDFix report
  • The renamed HijackThis log

Also, I was wondering. I can't download Adaware on his computer because it's so screwed up with all kinds of things popping up, that it won't let me download it. Would I be able to download Adaware onto a CD on my computer and then copy onto his computer from CD?

GameMaster, I've moved your problem to its own thread at http://www.computerforum.com/106519-gamemaster-s-thread.html. It just gets to confusing discussing multiple problems in the same thread, hope you understand :)

And yes, if any confirmation was needed, you can copy Ad-Aware onto a CD and then install it on the infected PC from there.

I recommend spending as little time as possible in Safe Mode with networking support, however - your system is completely exposed to the Internet and none of your protection programs are active. A very easy way for more malware to be installed on your system.

Ok. I'll do that, but I probably won't be over at my friends house again until this weekend. I'll keep you updated after I do this. Thank you for the advice, it's very much appreciated.
You're welcome, and there's no rush on my part - I'll still be here whenever you're ready to post.

So how do I know what are the good things and what are the bad things in the HJT and SmitFraud files?
It really comes down to experience and research. You can look up the entries in the log, but learning to analyse these logs properly takes a great deal of time and effort. If you're interested in learning how to do this, there are a number of sites that provide training in this area.
