whats your opinions on this card ?

The 8500GT is not a very high performing card, so YES it will struggle with very recently released and demanding games. The price gives it away most of the time. ;)

The 8500GT is a budget card, so don't expect any blazing performance from it. I have yet to try out the 8600GT but if it's true to the x600GT tradition started by the 6600GT, it should be a very good buy. The x600GT series card since the 6600GT has been a great success for Nvidia, it forced ATi to scramble and bring out several cards to try and rival it in that part of the market.

I've just been looking at cards these past few days as I'm upgrading.

The 8600GT is a piece of crap basically and should be avoided.

You either need to look at the 7900GS or jump to the 8800 range.

This is the one I've bought: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-013-EA&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=358

why do you say its crap ? have you got one or had one ? your the only person so far who seems to think this everyone else seems to recomend that card.

so will the 8600GT play recent games well ? because i dont want to get a video card that is going to struggle when new games start coming out i want this build to not need any upgrading for a few year at least

The 7900GS is a very good card, can play the games out now on full settings.

How long do you think it'll be good for gaming for?

I've read lots of reviews over the past few days, in fact overclockers mention it specifically as a card to avoid if you are after a DX10 card.

*** Naff NVidia DX10 Card Warning***

Sadly the 8600 GTS has proven to be a bit of a let down in the frames per second department. Even Gibbo can’t recommend them, and they loose out to the x1950 Pro in DX 10 games. It’s a bit early to say this is the FX series all over again, but anyone buying the 8600 GTS or lower cards (8600 GT, 8500, 8300) to play games needs their head seeing to!

Just to be absolutely clear:-

8800 – Very good!
8600 – Very bad!

well im hoping it will be good enough for a good 4 or 5 year so if not i might have to relook at my budget and see if i can go for a better one  which i dont want to really

How long a card lasts, depends what you do with it.

If you want the latest and greatest games then you'll be lucky to get a year out of a card. If you want one that will last a while and is decent then look at the 8800 range. If that's too much, then like i said look at the 7900 range.

8600GTS is not a bad card, it outperforms 7900GS in most cases.

8600GT can even outperform 7900GS in oblivion and STALKER

So, no the 8600 series are not too bad as many people claiming here

The 8600GT is a piece of crap basically and should be avoided.

Why ?

6600 - 7600GS - 8600GT

6600GT - 7600GT - 8600GTS

SO, you need to compare 7600GT to 8600GTS not 8600GT, because 7600GT was replaced by 8600GTS, 7600GS was replaced by 8600GT and 7300GT was replaced by 8500GT

In my opinion, 8600GTS is big improvement over 7600GT because it performs on par with 7900GT and X1950pro, and it supports DX10

...........

8600GT currently cost only $119 after rebate

And 8600GTS cost $174

Edit: However I recommend 7900GS since you can get for very cheap price
