so i came across an amd phenom 9600 quad cor cpu with a clock speed of 2.3Ghz, and 2 megs of L3 cache. was wondering what your opinions are on it. is it a decent quad core, and would it be a good match up to run with a 9800gt. i bought it for $25, so figured why not, its a quad. thanks for your input.

I try not think much about the Phenom I 00 series, TLB bug. But for 25 bucks, what can you say. Pretty good deal. It will be fine with a 9800GT.

Considering what they charge for a dual-core that is a good deal all around. The P1s were a good chip and the tlb bug was only a issue in bizarre cases but it got blown out of proportion. They don't overclock super well though my buddy only got his to 3.2ghz and they run pretty hot. He never experienced the TLB bug after 2 years of using his so I dunno.

Still can't complain over $25...I would have bought it for my mothers system for that price.

alright, so i am using this quad and it works but sometimes my computer will freeze, or bsod. ill hard off and reboot and it will be fine for 5 min to hours on end, then do it again, sometimes complete freeze, sometimes my mouse still moves but i cant open or do anything, or a bsod. i remember someone saying something about the tlb bug or something about the 1st phenoms, and was wondering if this could be the problem and if so eloborate. the person who posted above this one made the comment i believe. any ideas. im not overclocking, voltage is the same as it should be and the temps are at 49c at idle and 63c under load, i have tried other ram, with the same results, but when i use a different cpu, it fine. also i noticed that in hwmonitor, the wattage used for this phenom x 4 9600 says 95 watts, but i thought this was a 125 watt cpu. could this be something to look into? thanks again

I'd just increase the CPU, NB and Memory voltages up one notch.

What's the TLB bug anyway? I've never heard of it.

A simple way of looking at it.

When the first Phenom I 00 series was running at above 2.4ghz/when it happen the most. When the procesor was mostly under load and the L3 cache was full, it would get instructions to over write a block of memory in L3 to be replaced with new data. Two instructions would try to delete the same block of memory. It would lock up.

They came out with a bios fix, but it killed the performance. It was fixed with the 50 series with the B3 stepping.
