When I plug in my headphones to my laptop I hear nothing

It is a new laptop, and everything works perfect.
But what am I missing.

I plug in the headphones to the laptop 3.5 jack and nothing happens.
It continues to play the music through the laptop speakers.

How come I am getting no sound on my headphones

how do I find that out.
It is a windows 7, lenovo thinkpad edge

go into control panel and see if your have realtek audio manager should be bottom right

Yes I have it, but I messed with the options and nothing changed, so I switched everything back to normal.
