when i put mp3 player into usb, the pc turns off immediately

and it doesn't restart itself. it never has a problem turning on if the player is still connected though. IS there a problem with the cable or the usb slot?

are there any programs to scan my usb slots? thanks

Does any other usb device work in the usb slot? If so, then I have to assume its your mp3 player.

I think its the player, £4 for a waterproof mp3 player with 2 gig capacity. had to be something wrong somehwere, still worth it. :D
Ill just have to remember to turn off the comp before plugging it in

I wouldn't say it's the mp3 player it's self, but rather the cable shorting the usb port which would cause the computer to turn off. You should try getting a new cable, it should be pretty cheap.

I unfortunately have problems turning the comp on now, this has been a very unlucky year for me computerwise -.-

I got an error message saying there was an error in the bios, I forgot the exact wording. I took the cmos battery out for a few hours, but It still had some problems booting. It later tried to restore itself to a last know good configuration. Should I try and update the bios via the net? No idea why this is happening, grrr.

You could have short circuited something. Maybe try re installing windows if you can't get it to work.

When you remove the cmos battery it does change some settings back to default. For example, if you are running in ahci mode this setting may revert back to IDE mode when resetting cmos. Also when you reset the cmos, the date and time will be wrong so that will have to get fixed.

I think its a problem with the cable.
Check if it happens when you connect to a different USB slot, if it doesn't happen it may be because of the faulty USB slot. if it does happen again test it on another computer to see if it works.

Ok thanks, I ordered a new cable. After taking the cmos battery out, my computer was ok.

The comp fails to boot 50% of the time if I have the player plugged in, from any usb slot, then 50% of the time it boots, it isn't detecting the player.

Oddly enough it works okay on my parents pc, although it says it fails to load the drivers for the device, it is quite usable. Strange eh?
