Hello, new here. I wanted to play an older game (Rollercoaster tycoon) on XP, but when I try to install it, the error messages reads: "Could not set up registry entries." Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Thank you

First we need to offer a Welcome to the Computer Forum! http://www.computerforum.com/70672-official-welcome-thread.html and remind all new members to review the http://www.computerforum.com/52038-forum-rules.html

The original version of the game was likely designed to run on 95/98 and not compatible with XP. There are always problems trying to install older games like that on XP despite the backward capatibility with Fat 16 and Fat 32. The information for the third updated version that runs on 98 upto XP is seen at http://www.atari.com/rollercoastertycoon/us/gameinfo

For that game there one possible means of running the installer itself would be to use DosBox if it had been run on dos as well as in an older version of Windows. If it was strictly a Windows game you will need one of the newer sequels for XP. That's life! When Duke3D was installed through DosBox here the game did install since it could run on msdos as well as 95 and 98. Through a virtual dos window like DosBox you can see from the image here that the game froze when entering the opening game map. http://img406.imageshack.us/my.php?image=duke3dstallinghi9.jpg

What graphics card are you playing oblivion on? I find the game to be repetitive and tedious, I stopped shortly after I got out of the jail and on my first mission to find the heir. Gets too boring, I don't know how people can play 100s of hours on that game. Maybe I'm just crap....I don't know....

You are logged in as an administrator correct? Simple users do not have persmission to access the registry.

The old game there is most likely geared for the 95/98 environment where seeing that run even if you could edit the registry manually to add the necessary values wouldn't be supported under XP. There are tons of older games that simply will not run. As I pointed out earlier the game has seen sequels that are XP compliant. You simply need a newer version. Don't feel bad! The new tuner card installed lately fails to be seen in Vista! aw crap! ggrrrr.... PowerDVD compliant with Vista? according to lists seen? HAR! You need newer version. new tuner card too! gggrrrr...!

Thank you for replies.
Hmm, I think there is something wrong with my registry. When I download registry mechanic, it says some core files are missing. When I run Ashampoo WinOptimizer, it is able to find orphaned registry files but not delete it. Plus, the original problem of the error message, "Could not set up registry entries"....

I found Registry Mechanic wasn't that great compared to a freeware cleaner called RegCleaner found at http://www.majorgeeks.com/RegCleaner_d460.html To run that look at the "Tools" dropdown menu on the explorer at the top and scroll down to the "registry cleanup" link there for the side menu to open. Then drop down to the "do them all" option as seen in the screen shot here.

It's a fantastic tool that works far better in "all versions" of Windows according to the information on it and having used it now for several years. The main window upon starting it up allows you to manually select reg keys you intend to see removed by simply unchecking them and clicking the remove button at the bottom.

It's a nice program, but it hasn't solved my problem. I am starting to think it's not really a compability issue but something genuinely wrong with my registry.

Well this is what I initially was trying to point out. If it had been an old strictly dos game DosBox may have seen it installed and running through the virtual dos window there. But an old 95 game is already 10yrs. old and outdated for XP. Even if that was a 95/98 game even some newer like 98-ME might have problems. The same can be said now on XP compatible softwares not running on a Vista machine. You have to go by which version of Windows it was written for in most cases especially since they released sequels #2 + #3 for ME and XP.
